Wine of the Month -- 2009 Reserve Pinot Noir

I sip this wine and simply smile.  2009 was an amazing summer for me; full of warm nights on the patio and hot afternoons of softball in the park.  While I enjoyed the sun, the pinot grapes on our property were soaking it up and reaching their full ripeness in early October.

June Wine of the Month

In recent years,  it has been the tendency among American aromatic white wine producers to attempt dry, true-to-the-varietal and approachable (by price and taste) Gewürztraminer.  The Montinore Estate, 2009 Reserve Gewürztraminer delivers on all counts.  Stephen Webber, czar of all matters white at Montinore,  has given us yet another understated, beautifully wrapped wine.  The nose has the requisite, rose aroma, and the flavor is the image of tart-sweet  lychee  and  peach.   Those who have noted fresh lychee and gewürz mentioned together before, and doubted, try them side by side and let the skepticism melt.  Ah, food  and  gewürz, thought you’d never ask.   How about a paprika-rich rouladen, or perhaps a little dim sum?  The Reserve Gewürz  tames  some of the food’s spice, stays well out of the way of its subtleties, yet abides  in the mid-palate and finish so as not to be missed.   Ok, make mine the Reserve Gewürz  and  rouladen.  I’ll be reading Goethe and Barth anyway!  Happy Spring and  Summer.

Best,
Tim (staffer)
